Bald Eagle
In this post I will talk about the Bald Eagle's reproduction. The Bald Eagles are sexually mature at four or five years of age. When they are old enough to breed, they often return to the area where they were born. It is thought that Bald Eagles mate for life. However, if one member of a pair dies or disappears, the other will choose a new mate. A pair which has repeatedly failed in breeding attempts may split and look for new mates. Eagles produce between one and three eggs per year, but it is rare for all three chicks to successfully fly. Both the male and female take turns incubating the eggs. The other parent will hunt for food or look for nesting material. http://www.nwf.org/Wildlife/Wildlife-Library/Birds/Bald-Eagle.aspx

I love seeing a bald eagle fly. They seem so majestic. I wish we saw more of them around here.
ReplyDeleteI I always wondered why bald eagles were endangered. But now I realize it's probably because they only produce 3 eggs a year and not all of them make it. With the small amount of bald eagles there are and the small amount that they reproduce, no wonder there's not many of them.
ReplyDeleteThese beautiful creatures are so important to our country's morale. It is understandable why they have been made endangered because of the fact of only laying three eggs a year. Since not all of the babies die, they will keep reproducing, but their rate of reproduction is a cause for worry. I hope the majestic birds keep living on.
ReplyDeleteBald eagles are such a beautiful creature. No wonder why we use it to represent our country. It's sad to see that they are slowly becoming more endangered over the years. Hopefully things start to change for them soon. It'll be sad to see them disappear over time.
ReplyDeleteI find it interesting that the eagles return home to mate. Also that they mate for life and keep finding different mates. The fact that they only have 1-3 eggs a year and they don't all survive explains why they are endangered.
